Quebec City has an image of being a large village, opposite of the ultra-modern metropolis that is Montreal, but you’ll find it has a few tricks up its sleeve.
In fact, it offers many technological advances specifically to enhance their tourists’ experience
Around the Place Royale, it is possible to get tourist information via podcast and even play a bit of a game by answering a series of trivia questions.
To do this, you simply download the podcasts available on the Interpretation Centre of the Place Royale (27, Rue Notre-Dame). You can even find a wifi hotspot on site if you hadn’t taken the time to download the podcast in advance.
The podcasts are available for download here.
The Museum of Civilization has two iOS apps (too bad for Android users):
You can find the Museum of Civilization at 85 rue Dalhousie. More information can also be found on their website
Armed with questions, a map, and GPS, you’re off for a scavenger hunt in the streets of Old Quebec. The inspired Geocaching is a fun and easy way to learn and discover. If you find the $10 GPS rental a bit expensive, you can use the GPS application on your smartphone. You’ll find it at the Interpretation Centre of Urban Life in Quebec City at the Maison Chevalier (50, rue du Marché-Champlain) and on their website.
Well, of course we use this kind of technology in our everyday life, but believe me, once it explodes in the world of tourism, taking a holiday will never be the same! Imagine walking down a street with GoogleGlasses; as soon as you focus on a specific point, interesting, additional information is displayed whilst the text of your visit is playing in your headphones. But stop daydreaming, Geeky tourists, augmented reality is currently contained on a screen. I didn’t see it personally, but I’m suddenly not sure it’s worth it. If you have seen the GoogleGlasses feature, do not hesitate to write your opinion in the comments section.
It’s also available at the Maison Chevalier.
