I have great admiration for designers. These wizards are capable of creating anything using only a leaf branch and a pencil. There are, of course, styles that speak to me more than others and those that Véronique makes (manga, kawaii, chibi), I like best!
I should say right now that meeting Veronica is one of the best surprises of my trip so far. She is the kind of person who completely changes one’s perspective. I used to say that geeks have a little grain of madness that compels them not do anything halfway, it is clearly true for Véronique. If you were to see the length and level of detail in the messages that we have exchanged, you would fall off your chair! But as if it were not enough for her to detail all the geekiest places in Montreal, she even organized a visit of the most interesting places for me with her friends. Frankly, who could ask for more?
Certainly, my stay in Montreal would have been very different if I had not encountered her.
Everything began at Fanamanga in Quebec. Janny and Sonia gave me many contacts and Veronica was one of them because they had some of her creations available for sale. So I contacted her and after we exchanged many emails, we met for a geeky tour of Montreal accompanied by Eric and Carole, two of her friends. It also provided an opportunity to learn a little more about her work.
Her specialties are fanart (drawings of famous characters, mainly from video games and manga), original illustrations, kawai (Japanese for “cute”), and the creation of festival mascots, a domain in which she particularly excels!
Her career history is interesting. After studying graphic design (logo, DTP…) she worked for a year re-doing sports manuals in Quebec. Not a very exciting job. Now, she’s embarking on a 1 year master’s program studying Multimedia Design. Her new career is punctuated by creating software for web sites geared toward medical training. However, it is difficult to find real contracts.
At this time, she has discovered anime festivals and decided to launch her own independent project.
50% of her income now comes from her creations.
Of course she receives private orders, but not enough for her to live off of completely yet.
That being said, she doesn’t particularly try to make herself known. Perhaps shyness is the cause…
But fanart and kawai represent only one facet of her work.
She seeks to improve her illustrations including work on human anatomy.
She has also started glass-painting, bag-painting, and sewing.
Here’s a small bonus for other artists, here is her method of drawing:
- Rough pencil
- Tracing in Manga Studio
- Color in Photoshop
- Shading under Paintody
- Completion in Photoshop
Véronique, you have my full support for the continuation of your career in graphic design!!!!
She also gets a HUGE HUGE HUGE thank you for all the GeekWorldTour badges she gave me, which help break the ice for discussions at shows, conventions and more!
